It is also a love story between the young man and his ‘Valet’ who served as his chaperone and mentor during the boy’s Harem service.
S. R. Reynolds has never forgotten the mishandled case of fifteen-year-old Michelle Anderson, a vibrant beauty who went missing from Reynolds’ Knoxville, Tennessee, neighborhood years earlier. Aided by her old professor, famed forensic anthropologist Dr. Bill Bass–founder of the University of Tennessee’s “Body Farm”–Reynolds picks up the trail of this cold case.
As she presses neglected pieces of the puzzle into place, Reynolds unearths a string of heinous kidnappings and rapes across the South, crimes that span decades. She talks to the victims. A picture begins to form. Patterns appear. And all evidence points to one man: convicted sex offender Larry Lee Smith.
As a result of Reynolds’s efforts, the Knoxville Police Department reopens the cold case of Michelle’s disappearance, but Larry Lee is about to be released from a Georgia prison, where he served time for a related crime–a “similar transaction.” What transpires in this story is amazing on many levels. Larry Lee is every parent’s worst nightmare.
“Similar Transactions” is a gripping memoir about the author’s determination to solve a murder and to bring the perpetrator to justice.
George Monteiro’s stories, poems, and sketches about his childhood in a Depression-Era New England mill town create a vibrant composite memoir of Valley Falls, Rhode Island and its Portuguese American community. Like his parents, many of these people had emigrated from rural Portugal to find work in the textile mills and build a life more hopeful and prosperous than the one they had left behind. Through its various forms of expression, this memoir seeks to understand Francisco and Augusta Monteiro, who found a life that was more difficult than they expected. But it also paints a vivid picture of the colorful characters whose varied adaptations to American life made the Portuguese community of Valley Falls both a unique environment in which to grow and one that is familiar to everyone in this nation of immigrants.

Some people hear the word sociopath and conjure up the image of a psychopathic killer, but while all psychopaths have sociopathic characteristics, sociopaths do not kill the body. They are killers of souls. Recently divorced and vulnerable, I was unaware of his motives. It started with “love-bombing.” Once he had me where he wanted me, he played on my sentiments to throw me off balance and put my world on the crazy train. Disguised by his upbeat greetings and funny demeanor, his abuse was subtle and hard to pinpoint. I walked around in a fog and functioned, mindlessly accepting his behaviors for fear of causing a rift. Under constant stress and anxiety over losing him, I give Daniel the benefit of the doubt. Doubt! Remember that word. It will drive me to the edge of insanity by the time the relationship is done. Not everyone will understand how he could manipulate and deceive me for so long. They don’t know.
Daniel was clever and a master of manipulation, able to twist the truth until I accepted his fabricated reality. I didn’t recognize his cunning, devious nature. It’s still hard to believe that the person I loved never really existed. He was a ghost, a man without a soul.
Take a walk into this journey of domestic abuse, survival, faith and forgiveness.
